Due to the flood caused by Hurricane Mitch in October 2000, many people had
to be evacuated from their homes, especially around villages on the Río Hondo
and along the New River. In Orange Walk Town, people from the Louisiana
Area and Trial Farm had to leave their homes. (Click

As a result of this tragedy, the Rotary Club of Orange Walk organized a
Radio-thon to gather food, clothing and medical supplies to aid the
affected. Along with the two local radio stations, Estereo Tu Y Yo and
S.C.R.S. (Sugar City Radio Station), the event was held on Saturday October 14,
2000 and was a huge success. A large amount of clothing, food and medical
supplies was collected along with some cash.
These supplies were then handed over to the Orange Walk Red Cross which is
overseeing the distribution of aid to those affected. (Click
